New Delhi, October 17, 2024: The Indo-Danish Plastic Innovation Network hosted a pivotal round-table event at The Oberoi, aimed at advancing sustainability and innovation in plastic waste management. A major highlight of the event was the official launch of the Green Fellowship Program under Mashaal by M3M Foundation, which will offer financial grants to startups, incubators, and entrepreneurs driving technological advancements in climate change mitigation and environmental protection. This initiative, a collaboration between DRIIV and M3M Foundation, focuses on fostering innovation in sustainable practices and environmental conservation.

DRIIV, a key body of the Delhi Science and Technology (S&T) Cluster under the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, is dedicated to addressing pressing environmental and societal challenges by aligning purpose-driven innovations with solutions.

With India generating approximately 3.4 million tons of plastic waste annually, of which less than 50% is recycled, this initiative marks a crucial step in addressing the nation’s escalating waste management challenges. The event convened prominent policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and stakeholders from India and Denmark to explore collaborative strategies for promoting a circular economy.

Dr. Payal Kanodia, Chairperson & Trustee of M3M Foundation, emphasized, “Sustainability is not just an option; it’s our responsibility. Through the Green Fellowship Program under Mashaal, we are championing innovative solutions to transform how we approach plastic.”

A key session of the event, titled “Mobilizing Corporate Support into Sustainability,” was chaired by Ms. Shipra Misra, MD & CEO of DRIIV. Ms. Misra highlighted the importance of businesses embedding sustainability into their core strategies, viewing it not only as a responsibility but as a catalyst for innovation and growth. The session called on corporations to play an active role in creating a sustainable and resilient future.

The discussion also addressed how industry players can engage in open innovation challenges and collaborative R&D projects to create eco-friendly materials and improve recycling efficiency. By uniting stakeholders from the plastic value chain, the event fostered co-creation of commercially viable solutions aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable production practices.

The Mashaal Green Fellowship will focus on critical areas such as greenhouse gas reduction, energy storage, sustainable mobility, waste-to-energy technologies, air pollution mitigation, water security, and healthcare innovations. By supporting initiatives that tackle these key challenges, the fellowship aims to drive solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future.

With the combined strengths of India and Denmark in research, technology, and commercialization, this event marks a significant step towards building a circular plastic economy, benefiting both nations and the global community.
