Bengaluru, October 27, 2026: Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for the development of 110 kV power infrastructure to meet the 90 MW power requirement of BPCL’s Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU) project at its Mumbai Refinery.
The collaboration marks a significant step towards strengthening industrial power infrastructure while supporting one of the most important refinery expansion projects currently underway in India.

Supporting a Landmark Refining Project
The PRFCCU project is the first initiative of its kind to be executed in India and represents a strategic milestone in BPCL’s journey towards higher-value product recovery and petrochemical diversification.
Key highlights of the project include:
- Processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA)
- Project outlay of approximately ₹14,203 crore
- BPCL’s second-largest project currently under execution
- The largest project ever undertaken at Mumbai Refinery
By enhancing domestic value addition, the PRFCCU project is expected to contribute significantly to India’s energy security and support the national vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Scope of the Agreement
Under the MoU, Tata Power will:
- Provide 110 kV connectivity
- Design and develop the associated power infrastructure required for the project
- Strengthen power connectivity and transmission capabilities for the refinery’s future needs
The infrastructure development is expected to be completed over approximately 24 months, with a combined estimated investment of around ₹250 crore by Tata Power and BPCL, subject to required approvals and project milestones.
Strengthening Mumbai’s Industrial Power Network
Beyond addressing BPCL’s immediate power requirement, the project will also strengthen Tata Power’s transmission network in the Trombay region.
The enhanced infrastructure is expected to support:
- Rising electricity demand from large industrial consumers
- Future concentrated-load developments
- Growing industrial activity in one of Mumbai’s key industrial zones
This investment aligns with Tata Power’s broader strategy to build resilient and future-ready power infrastructure for the city.
Long-Term Infrastructure Vision for Trombay
As part of its long-term development roadmap, Tata Power also plans to strengthen transmission infrastructure in Trombay through the development of a 400 kV transmission facility over the next five years.
The planned enhancement is expected to:
- Increase power evacuation capability
- Improve grid reliability
- Support industrial and commercial growth
- Ensure reliable power availability for Mumbai’s expanding economy
Strategic Significance
The partnership reinforces the commitment of both Tata Power and BPCL towards strengthening Mumbai’s energy ecosystem and supporting India’s industrial growth ambitions.
The initiative also underscores Tata Power’s continued focus on investing in transmission and distribution infrastructure to support long-term industrial development, energy security, and self-reliance.
