Dependence on imported defence technologies has long created strategic vulnerabilities. India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative is shifting focus toward self-reliance—not just in hardware, but in AI algorithms, embedded electronics, secure communication frameworks, and defence-grade operating systems. Deep-tech start-ups are emerging as critical players in this ecosystem, driving innovation across robotics, sensor fusion, cybersecurity, and edge computing.

Indian innovators are now designing mission-ready solutions tailored to operational realities—developing swarm intelligence, GPS-denied navigation, real-time object detection, and resilient electronic warfare systems. These advances strengthen India’s technological independence and open doors for defence exports.

Drones are evolving from surveillance tools into versatile platforms for logistics, reconnaissance, disaster response, and tactical operations. The next leap lies in autonomy—drones capable of navigating dynamic environments, coordinating missions, and operating even in communication-denied zones. India’s strengths—its engineering talent pool, expanding digital infrastructure, semiconductor ambitions, and supportive policies—provide a strong foundation. To fully leverage these, India must:

- Expand incubation programmes for deep-tech start-ups.
- Enhance testing infrastructure and secure digital ecosystems.
- Encourage export-oriented innovation.
Leadership in Defence AI will come not from ambition alone, but from continuous investment in knowledge creation and indigenous capability.
