New Delhi, Delhi, India | 13th August 2025: Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) giant VinFast has officially opened its first EV manufacturing plant in India, marking a bold step into one of the world’s most competitive yet fast-growing automotive markets. The new facility, located in Thootukudi, Tamil Nadu, is more than just an assembly line—it represents Vietnam’s rapid transformation from an agricultural economy to a rising industrial powerhouse.
The expansion is driven by Pham Nhat Vuong, Vietnam’s first billionaire and founder of Vingroup, the country’s largest conglomerate. Vingroup’s influence is enormous, accounting for around 1.6% of Vietnam’s GDP in 2023 through diverse operations in technology, real estate, and healthcare.
Vingroup’s Integrated Ecosystem Powers VinFast’s Global Push
VinFast’s global strategy is strengthened by direct access to Vingroup’s cutting-edge subsidiaries, creating a unique ecosystem advantage. This network provides the technology, expertise, and resources needed to compete in the international EV arena.
For example, VinBigData—a tech subsidiary—contributes innovations such as the ViVi AI smart voice assistant and advanced camera systems, enhancing VinFast’s vehicles with in-house technology that rivals often need to outsource.
A standout innovation is VinFast MirrorSense, the world’s first AI-powered automatic mirror adjustment system, developed in collaboration with Vingroup’s research teams. Debuted at CES 2024 and honored with an Innovation Award, MirrorSense highlights how AI can enhance driving safety and convenience.
Sustainability at the Core
VinFast’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond EV production. In Vietnam, it has partnered with VinEnergo, Vingroup’s renewable energy arm, to generate 50 million kWh of solar energy annually—cutting 33,000+ tons of carbon emissions each year. Its advanced battery storage systems meet global safety standards, setting benchmarks in green manufacturing.
The India Plant: Scale, Jobs, and EV Adoption
The 400-acre Tamil Nadu facility will initially produce two premium electric SUVs—the VF 7 and VF 6. Starting with a capacity of 50,000 vehicles annually, the plant is designed to scale up to 150,000 units to meet growing demand in South Asia. Advanced automation ensures high quality, while the project generates thousands of jobs, reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s reputation as a leading EV manufacturing hub in India.
Beyond production, VinFast is building a nationwide EV ecosystem in India, including service centers, battery recycling partnerships, and digital solutions. The aim is to make EV ownership more accessible, affordable, and practical for Indian consumers.
Competitive Edge in a Crowded Market
While India’s EV market is crowded, VinFast’s ecosystem strategy offers a competitive edge. By leveraging Vingroup’s innovation, scale, and operational expertise, VinFast can compete from day one—bringing not just cars, but an entire support infrastructure for India’s green mobility future.
The Tamil Nadu plant is more than a manufacturing milestone—it’s a gateway to deeper collaboration between Vietnam’s most influential business group and India’s rapidly growing technology and infrastructure sectors.
