Hindustan Zinc Partners with TERI to Transform Wasteyard into Green Belt

  • Transforming a wasteland into a greenbelt at the Chanderiya Lead-Zinc Smelter.
  • World’s Most Sustainable Metals & Mining Company utilizes Mycorrhiza technology to boost biodiversity.

New Delhi, 27th August 2024 — Hindustan Zinc Limited (NSE: HINDZINC), recognized as the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer and the leading sustainable metals and mining company by S&P Global, has launched the second phase of its transformative project to convert 16 hectares of wasteland at the Chanderiya Lead-Zinc Smelter into a thriving greenbelt. This initiative leverages Mycorrhiza technology in collaboration with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) to enhance biodiversity and safeguard natural ecosystems surrounding its operations.

The wasteland, previously laden with Jarofix—a residual waste from metal extraction rich in iron—began its green transformation using Mycorrhiza technology. This innovative approach promotes a symbiotic relationship between plants and fungi, enabling vegetation to thrive under challenging conditions. The first phase, which converted 6.25 hectares and involved planting approximately 11,000 native species, has already set a benchmark. The ongoing phase aims to further stabilize dump slopes, control erosion, and increase carbon sequestration. This achievement was honored with the CII National Award for Environmental Best Practices 2021.

Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc Limited, commented, “As the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company, our focus on environmental responsibility is unwavering. The reclamation of the Jarofix Yard through Mycorrhiza technology exemplifies our commitment to innovative, sustainable practices. We are proud to lead in transforming industrial by-products into valuable green assets.”

Hindustan Zinc’s environmental efforts extend beyond this project. The company is intensifying its use of renewable energy, recently launching a renewable power supply from Serentica’s 180 MW solar project as part of a 450-MW renewable power agreement. To offset its carbon footprint, Hindustan Zinc has planted over 2 million trees in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. The company has also implemented Miyawaki plantations to create dense, diverse forests quickly.

Further, Hindustan Zinc is the first Indian company to release a Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) report, integrating nature-related risks into strategic planning. It has also entered a significant three-year partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

This greenbelt project is a model for industries seeking to tackle environmental challenges while advancing sustainability goals. Hindustan Zinc aims to complete 1 million plantations by 2025 with TERI, enhancing carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation.

As a pioneer in sustainability, Hindustan Zinc has received the Leadership Band (A-) designation from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for excellence in water security and climate change. The company continues to strive for no net loss of biodiversity at its mine sites and is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company, is a crucial player in providing essential metals for the global energy transition towards a sustainable future.
