Mumbai/Erode, 26th August 2025: Intellecap’s Circular Apparel Innovation Factory (CAIF), in partnership with the Perundurai SIPCOT Textile Processors Association (PSTPA), today launched the EU SWITCH-Asia program “Catalysing the Green Transition of India’s Textile Sector” in Tamil Nadu’s strategically important Perundurai textile processing cluster. The comprehensive 3.5-year initiative, developed in collaboration with H&M Group and supported by leading financing institutions including SIDBI and British International Investment, represents a breakthrough approach to accelerating sustainability and decarbonization across India’s critical textile hubs.
Pioneering Scalable Decarbonization for India’s Textile SMEs
The program launch, held at Hotel Turmeric in Erode with over 70 participants representing 34 manufacturing units, brought together local manufacturers, international brand sustainability teams, financing institutions, and government officials. The event featured comprehensive technical training on greenhouse gas inventorization and energy management, alongside inspiring case study presentations from local manufacturing units that have successfully implemented sustainable practices.
Perundurai stands as one of India’s most significant textile processing centers, hosting a dense concentration of dyeing and printing facilities that serve as crucial links in both domestic and global textile supply chains. As the cluster seeks to strengthen its competitive position while reducing environmental impact, the program targets critical transition areas including the shift from coal to biomass-based fuels, enhanced energy and water efficiency, and the adoption of advanced wastewater and chemical management practices.
Context-Driven Solutions for Real-World Impact
“Our decarbonization program is meticulously designed to address the unique operational realities facing SMEs in the Perundurai cluster,” explained Siddharth Lulla, Partner at Intellecap. “Rather than demanding immediate wholesale transformation, we’re constructing practical pathways that align with their operational pace, financial constraints, and growth ambitions. This initiative exemplifies Intellecap CAIF’s commitment to delivering contextualized, ecosystem-driven sustainability solutions under the EU SWITCH-Asia Programme.”
The program’s tailored approach addresses fundamental challenges that have historically hindered MSME participation in sustainability initiatives, including limited access to technical expertise, sustainable financing options, and scalable green technologies.
Industry Leadership and Collaborative Innovation
The launch featured insights from key industry stakeholders, with PSTPA leaders including Suresh Manoharan sharing perspectives on the cluster’s green transition priorities. Brajesh Chaudhary, Program Specialist-Sustainability at H&M, provided valuable context on evolving brand sustainability mandates and procurement policies, while local champions A. Arumugam, GM-Processing at BKS Textiles, and M. Govindasamy, Senior Manager at Arthanari Loom Centre, presented compelling case studies of successful sustainability interventions at their respective facilities.
Critical to the program’s success is robust financing support, with Ankit Gupta, Partner at Intellecap, alongside representatives from SIDBI Erode and British International Investment, outlining comprehensive green financing options designed to enable widespread sustainability adoption across the cluster.
Setting the Foundation for India’s Sustainable Textile Leadership
This initiative represents a transformative milestone for the Perundurai textile cluster, reinforcing its pivotal role as a major dyeing hub within the broader Tirupur and Karur export value chains. The cluster has already initiated a feasibility study for a common biomass briquetting plant designed to eliminate coal dependency—marking the first concrete step toward establishing Perundurai as India’s premier sustainable dyeing hub.
The biomass transition project serves as a potential replication model for similar clusters across India, demonstrating how collaborative infrastructure investments can drive sector-wide environmental improvements while maintaining competitive economics.
Strengthening Global Competitiveness Through Sustainability
By aligning closely with international climate commitments and rapidly evolving buyer sustainability requirements, the program positions participating SMEs to not only meet current environmental compliance standards but to proactively address emerging market expectations. This strategic positioning enhances both the competitive advantage and long-term resilience of manufacturing units across the region.
The initiative’s comprehensive approach—combining technical capacity building, financing facilitation, and peer learning networks—creates a sustainable foundation for continued environmental improvement and business growth.
