Taneira Launches GI-Tagged Handloom Sarees to Celebrate National Handloom Day and Preserve India’s Weaving Heritage

Bengaluru, Karnataka, India | 11th August 2025: As India gears up to celebrate National Handloom Day, Taneira—a Tata product—has strengthened its mission to protect the country’s rich textile heritage by introducing Geographical Indication (GI) tagging on its handloom sarees. This move makes Taneira one of the first Indian saree brands to offer GI-certified weaves from iconic clusters such as Banarasi, Chanderi, and Maheshwari.

The initiative highlights Taneira’s deep commitment to authenticity, ethical craftsmanship, and artisan empowerment, ensuring each saree is a true representation of the community and region it originates from. This step builds on the brand’s history of offering authenticity markers such as the Handloom Mark, Silk Mark, and Zari Certification, further reinforcing customer trust and provenance.

Empowering Artisans and Safeguarding Traditions

As part of the GI-tagging program, Taneira partners closely with vendor networks and artisan clusters, offering documentation support, legal guidance, and on-ground assistance to secure GI certification. In an era dominated by mechanized production, this hands-on approach helps preserve traditional weaving skills and provides artisans with rightful recognition and economic opportunities.

Each GI-tagged saree serves as a living piece of India’s cultural geography, combining breathability, durability, and timeless elegance. By wearing one, customers not only own a work of art but also contribute to sustaining generations of weavers and keeping the craft alive.

A Transparent, Certified Handloom Experience

Taneira’s sarees now come with a complete suite of authenticity markers—Handloom Mark, Silk Mark, Zari Certification, Khadi Certificate, and Pashmina Certification—now enhanced with GI tagging to guarantee regional authenticity.

Ambuj Narayan, CEO of Taneira, stated:

“On National Handloom Day, we are proud to take another step toward safeguarding India’s weaving traditions. Through GI-tagged sarees and transparent sourcing, we aim to empower artisans, preserve heritage, and help customers make conscious, informed choices.”

Expanding GI-Tagged Collections

Currently, Taneira is working on adding GI-tagged weaves from nearly 10 more regions across India, with the goal of making authentic, region-specific handlooms accessible to the modern Indian woman. This effort aligns with the brand’s vision to unite India’s diverse weaving heritage under one roof, ensuring that every purchase supports the ecosystem that sustains it.

This National Handloom Day, Taneira invites customers to explore the stories, soil, and soul woven into every GI-tagged saree—a celebration of culture, craftsmanship, and conscious fashion.
