Muvi brings in the Hackathon Culture to Bhubaneswar!

Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India – Hackathons are a great way to encourage developers’ communities in any geography and also to bring out the hidden talent in limelight. One such interesting event was conducted by a first of its kind PaaS based product company based out of Bhubaneswar – Muvi.

Muvi, a prominent international video streaming platform provider, having a Head office in New York and development center in Bhubaneswar, successfully conducted a 12-hour coding hackathon on 11th of February at their Bhubaneswar office, hosting passionate coders from the region. The company was overwhelmed by the response it received from developers’ community in and around the city and thanks all 250+ registrants and participants of the event for their support.

The 12-hour non-stop marathon started at 8am in the morning with an inaugural speech by company’s CTO – Pragyan P and then kicked off showing a great level of enthusiasm up till 8 in the evening, when participants were asked to submit their apps for the judgement.

The day was filled with interesting Tech talks and a common passion to code interesting concepts. All the participants showed a great level of enthusiasm throughout the day, coding, snacking, networking, learning and exchanging interesting ideas. There were some really unique concepts that came up around audio/video service as per the theme of this Hackathon.

Muvi brings in the Hackathon Culture to Bhubaneswar!

“Frankly speaking we didn’t expect such a great level of excitement for the event but we’re happy that the youth in Odisha is really excited about technology and is very much willing to experiment their hands on developing unique apps.” stated Muvi’s CTO Pragyan. The apps developed during this Hackathon revolved around concepts like multi-bit rate players, video search algorithms and video sharing social apps. We’ve also seen some out of the beat apps like video anomaly detection, webRTC calling, etc.

Owing to the skills, innovation and efforts put in by the participants, it was extremely difficult for the Technical panel at Muvi to pick a unanimous winner, and thus ended up announcing 3 winners.

Ujjwal Kumar Gupta, a software professional from Bhubaneswar who built a video player with the ability to play multi bitrate video from scratch was selected as the first winner winning Rs. 30,000 cash prize. Ujjwal did an exceptionally great job creating such a complex piece of software within 12 hours.

Prashant Kumar (a third-year CSE student from KIIT university) who developed a searching algorithm for locally stored videos was selected as the first runner up along with Sarthak Mishra (a second-year student also from KIIT University) who had developed a social app for sharing videos, stood up as the second runner up. Both the ideas were unique and were appreciated highly by the judging panel. Both these runner ups were presented with a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 each.

The winners were announced on Monday a day after the Hackathon and were awarded with respective cheques at Muvi’s office Tuesday, 14th February. More than 10 participants, who’ve shown exceptional skills coding unique concepts were invited to initiate conversations on various job offers based on their skills.

“This was our first such initiative to fuel the hidden talent in our city and provide them a platform to showcase their tech skills and network around,” stated Rama Rao, the event coordinator and Muvi’s head of operations. “Based on such a wonderful response, we are planning to make Hackathons a part of our Yearly conduct.”
