Semicon India 2025: PM Modi Presents Nation’s First Indigenous Made-in-India Vikram-32 Chip to the World

National, 2nd September 2025: In a defining moment for India’s technological journey, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today unveiled the country’s first fully indigenous 32-bit microprocessor Vikram-32 at the Semicon India 2025 conference. This launch not only asserts India’s entry into the elite league of advanced semiconductor producers but also marks a pivotal milestone in the pursuit of self-reliance and global leadership in high-tech manufacturing.

A Breakthrough in Indian Innovation

Developed by ISRO’s Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL), the Vikram-32 chip stands as a symbol of India’s independent innovation and engineering excellence. Designed, fabricated, and packaged entirely in India, at SCL’s Mohali facility, the chip showcases the nation’s growing capabilities in advanced hardware design.

With robust 32-bit architecture, support for floating-point operations, and high reliability in extreme environments, Vikram-32 is poised to power India’s critical missions from space exploration vehicles to defense systems and next-generation industrial automation. Its adaptability and compliance with international standards position it for diverse commercial and strategic applications, both at home and abroad.

Empowering Atmanirbhar Bharat

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the national significance of Vikram-32’s launch, stating, “This is more than a chip – it is a statement of India’s resolve to be self-reliant in cutting-edge sectors. We are not just ‘Make in India’; we are now ‘Design and Make in India.’” The chip’s successful deployment in ISRO spacecraft validates India’s prowess and establishes a secure supply chain for mission-critical technologies.

The government, under the India Semiconductor Mission, has invested over ₹1.6 lakh crore to support 10 major semiconductor projects, build new fabs and assembly units, and train 85,000 professionals by 2030. Vikram-32’s success acts as a catalyst for this ecosystem, garnering confidence from international partners and attracting new investments and collaborations.

Gateway to Global Semiconductor Markets

The launch of Vikram-32 comes as the global semiconductor market is poised to exceed $1 trillion. India, through significant strides in chip design, fabrication, and assembly, aims to capture 8–10% of this market share in the coming years.

The new processor not only supports India’s domestic missions but also opens major export opportunities for high-value, reliable, and cost-effective chips. Several international stakeholders have already expressed interest in integrating Indian-designed microprocessors into their products, attracted by the quality and robustness demonstrated through ISRO’s missions.

This move enables India to reduce its reliance on imported semiconductors, keep more value-add within its borders, and insulate its industries from global supply chain shocks. It reinforces India’s position as a trusted supplier for space, defense, automotive, and industrial electronics across global markets.

Accelerating Industrial Growth and Economic Opportunity

Vikram-32’s unveiling is expected to spur further growth in the electronics manufacturing sector, which has already seen a sixfold increase in production and an eightfold rise in exports over the past decade. With over 23 chip design startups and large-scale investments from global and domestic companies, India’s semiconductor ecosystem is rapidly maturing.

Commercial exports of Made-in-India chips are on the anvil, with the government expediting approvals and infrastructure to start global shipments within this year. Industry leaders have hailed this shift as a major opportunity to supply quality chips for international markets, leveraging India’s cost advantage and wealth of technical talent.

Shaping the Future of Technology

As India celebrates the launch of Vikram-32, the event is more than a technological milestone; it is a vision brought to life. It signals India’s arrival as a core contributor to the next wave of global technology innovation, armed with indigenous resources, talent, and determination.

Prime Minister Modi concluded, “Vikram-32 will inspire generations to innovate and lead. Our resolve is to empower every sector, space, defense, automotive, and beyond with next-generation technology, placing India at the forefront of the global digital revolution.”
