About the founders
Rajat founded Resumod while working on his other venture – Get Set Resumes which helps professionals with their career documents. Since the awareness about resumes among students is pretty low and they can’t spend money, Rajat thought of building a DIY tool that could be marketed to students and help them build their resumes in no time. Rajat is a single founder and is ably supported by his team. We are publishing an interview with Mr. Rajat Vashishta, Founder – Resumod:

Q.: What is the problem you are trying to solve?
Ans:
Resumod was conceptualized as a Do-it-Yourself Resume building tool which would provide unique and modern formats to students and also help them find quality internships, and jobs without going to multiple websites.Students generally struggle with building impactful and good-quality resumes that look modern and unique. Resumod aims to help jobseekers highlight their respective achievements, attitude, and personality, further enabling them to tell their story with confidence; without worrying about the presentation and formatting.

Q.: Can you share with us any insights that led you to believe that this is a big enough problem?
Ans:
50% of sales enquiries that we get on Get Set Resumes come from students, who eventually don’t buy our service because of the pricing (Rs. 699). This was a good starting statistic that we had. We conducted a preliminary research around Delhi University to find if students did struggle with their resume and found out almost 80% of the students had no idea about how to go about it. In fact 2 out of 5 students were getting their resumes made through cyber cafes and Xerox shops for Rs. 50 – Rs. 100! At Get Set Resumes, we were also often invited by Universities to conduct resume building workshops for students. These engagements further solidified the view that students NEEDED such a platform.

Q.: Tell us about the Product / Solution. Explain how you went about the Product-Market Fit Process.
Ans:
The product is a DIY tool which students and junior professionals can use to build a resume. We also have internships on our platform powered by leading internships companies in India.

Q.: What is your USP?
Ans:
Resumod is a one-stop DIY platform for resume building and internships. With the backing of a real resume writing team, Resumod helps jobseekers build quality resumes within minutes. The company has collaborated with popular internship platforms such as Internshala, Frapp and Hello Intern for displaying internships directly on the Resumod app thus making it easy for students to build resumes and search for matching internships on a single platform. No other tool provides Resume Writing support to end users. No other tool has internships of any kind. We have both.

Q.: What were your assumptions when you entered the market, learning that you have? Who in your mind is your ideal customer? Do you have at least one of them signed up?
Ans:
We built an MVP first and took it to a leading university for a live resume building workshop for 500+ students. This happened 45 days after the product was launched. 2 hours after the workshop our app crashed because of the heavy concurrent traffic from the university. We received a good backlash from the placement department since we had not anticipated so many users would use the tool!

We then realigned our servers, distributed load and went again to the same university for a successful round. We reached 5000 users within 3 months and presently, Resumod is strong with over 10,000 registered users on its platform.

Q.: What has been your biggest failure as an entrepreneur and what did you learn from it??
Ans:
Understanding people and building the organization around them. As a single founder, and constantly engaged with the product, service, operations, sales, finance and so many other things, it took me a lot of time to understand that the core of the business was the people who were turning the gears. I had to get out of the micromanaging zone and give everyone a lot of space to provide quality service to clients without getting suffocated. At the same time, it was important to create boundaries for everyone. This entire setting up, while ensuring that the respect is retained – was extremely delicate and took me years. Until recently I have had people who stood with me for as long as 4/5 years; for a startup that is a great figure.

Q.: How are you pricing the Product? Explain your thought process.
Ans:
The product is Freemium and plans to stay that way. We know students can’t afford to pay much and are very critical. So the idea is to let them try the software and pay only if they want to use it fully.

Q.: How did you get your first customer?
Ans:
Our first customers came through a University Resume building workshop.

Q.: Please tell us about the investors (if any)
Ans:
Currently bootstrapped, Resumod plans to raise funding gradually.

Q.: Is there any interesting success story? If yes, please write about it?
Ans:
I can’t think of anything as such. The university story I earlier talked about (where our servers crashed), recently invited us to conduct another workshop for students sitting for placements at their campus. So yes, we kind of turned things around through our product.

Q.: What is the big picture of your startup? Is this Product/service leading to something bigger? If so, how?
Ans:
It would be difficult to divulge all of that here but yes we are planning to go big with the platform. Mostly the idea is to help students holistically as far as their first job is concerned. A lot of it would be through partnerships.
